Outside of research, I have worked as a water resources engineer in the private and public sector and have submitted my PE licensure application in North Carolina. During my time in government and consulting, I worked on projects oriented towards nutrient reduction and ecosystem health to meet requirements of state and federal policies. This included working in the Chesapeake Bay, often for the State Highway Administration of Maryland and Anne Arundel County, in site prioritization projects to meet the Chesapeake Bay Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) plan. I conducted green stormwater infrastructure and stream restoration site searches, aided in all parts of the design process from desktop searches, to CAD drawings, cut and fill calculations, and design verification. I also assisted in wetland mitigation projects, including monitoring and the development of a wetland design program based on design publications.Â
In local government, I worked on the Water Quality team for the City of Raleigh Stormwater Management Division. Here, I managed the municipal NPDES permit, including managing illicit discharge and stream monitoring programs, identifying water quality projects, managing Raleigh Rainwater Rewards (including overhauling the policy to make it more accessible across income levels), and compiling annual NPDES reports and Neuse Rules reporting. I enjoyed getting out in the community to figure out how to leverage green stormwater infrastructure to best serve our population. I especially appreciated interacting with engaged community members and learned so much about stormwater management and policy from this position.
